English Abstract: | A new, original algorithm is presented to specify a satellite subsystem design range by its host satellite's orbit and constellation. Current methodologies for range specification are either based on analysis of a single satellite, which is overly conservative, or full simulation, which can be unnecessarily timeconsuming. The new algorithm proposed allows for the exact specification of the minimum required subsystem design range. The calculations which comprise this algorithm are based on the satellite constellation and the types of coverage desired. The reduction of design range can save costs associated with virtually all satellite subsystems which interact with other
elements in space or on the ground. By specifying this range precisely, expensive overdesign is avoided, thus reducing the projected system cost. As the weight of a sensor or antenna can be crudely approximated as proportional to the square of the design range, reducing this range even
slightly can have dramatic weight (and therefore cost) savings, in some cases by as much as 50%. |
